DS2 and UPCAST: driving innovation and synergy in the data space

On 29 April, the European DS2 and UPCAST projects jointly organised a webinar that brought their teams together to share progress, explore synergies and lay the groundwork for future collaborations in the field of data spaces.

The UPCAST project was presented by George Konstantinidis, Associate Professor at the University of Southampton. This project focuses on developing universal, reliable, transparent and easy-to-use add-ons for data marts, with the aim of improving the quality of data transactions between businesses, public administrations and citizens.

Regarding the DS2 project, Juha-Pekka Soininen, DS2 project coordinator from VTT, together with Stuart Campbell, technical lead of Information Catalyst, gave a detailed overview of DS2. This project aims to create highly independent modules and provides an Integrated Development Kit (IDT) that users can download, customise and adapt to their specific use cases.

UPCAST policy tools and negotiation

The seminar continued with a presentation on the UPCAST policy tool, which uses the Open Digital Rights Language (ODRL) to define data exchange policies, including permissions, prohibitions, obligations and restrictions. The UPCAST contract negotiation add-on was also demonstrated, which facilitates the clear distinction of roles between consumers and providers, simplifying the negotiation process.

Conclusion and future perspectives

This event proved to be highly productive, fostering valuable discussions and opening avenues for future collaborations between these two innovative projects. The synergy between DS2 and UPCAST promises significant advances in the interoperability and governance of data spaces in Europe.
